Some time later, I visited my parents back East, and lo and behold, in my old attic bedroom was a lovely lady, pearls and all, on the shelf. My mother told me it was in the "stuff" that she cleaned out of my grandmother's apartment when she went to the nursing home. Of course, I asked to have it, and that was the beginning of my collection. I then had no idea they were so collectible.
I now have 12 heads, and they're multiplying slowly but surely. Some of them I buy; others were gifts. My husband gave me my first teenager for our anniversary; one of my sisters picked up a couple of kids at an auction; another sister bought an elegant lady at an antique store while vacationing in Idaho.
I'm always searching for a good deal, and my family and friends keep their eyes open. I pretty much buy ones I like, not whether they have markings or fit a category, and I'm always thrilled when I receive one as a gift. They bring a smile to my face, as well as to everyone else who sees them, and hey, you can't beat that.
